How to Buy Gold Coins: The Do's and Don'ts

Honest Advice From A Firm You Can Trust

Since 1989, the Gold Information Network, a division of Austin Rare Coins, Inc. has served gold coin collectors, investors, and fellow gold coin dealers. Our firm has proudly established a reputation as a leading precious metals and rare coins company.

Our membership in the Professional Coin Grading Service, the Numismatic Guaranty Corp. and the American Numismatic Association reflect our desire to live up to the highest industry standards.

Our list of "Do's and Don'ts on this page are not criticisms of others, but warnings to coin collectors on how you can avoid rip-offs, problem coins, and overpaying for coins.

5 Tips to Know Before You Buy Gold

1. Don't buy gold online from kids, jewelry shops, or people you can't trust. Anyone can take your order and charge your credit card, but some may never ship your gold coins at all. Local pawn shops and flea markets are just as bad. They often don't play fair, they sell you bad or cleaned gold coins. If you're selling, they almost always offer you far below market prices. Almost as bad, the whole bunch are unlikely to be there to buy your gold coins years from now when you're ready to sell.

2. Don't buy coins at auctions. eBay approached our firm and recommended we sell our overstocked items, excess inventory, and junk coins that we don't sell to our Preferred Customers. Typically, those are ugly, common, ordinary coins that no one would buy if they saw them in person. We do not offer coins like that, because we never buy them in the first place. All of our gold coins are individually hand-picked for outstanding eye appeal. We can't imagine being so desperate as to dump off junk coins on an unsuspecting public at an Ebay auction. Watch out! There's no Santa Claus in the gold coin business. Nobody gives away rare and valuable gold coins!

3. Please avoid little one man coin shops. Many people masquerade as gold coin experts when they know little to nothing about the business. Buying from an experienced, nationally known coin dealer with a multi-million dollar coin inventory like the Gold Information Network just makes sense. Moving into 2012, we celebrate our 23rd year of incorporation. Each week our Austin Buying Trust sees millions of dollars of coins. They attend just about every major conference, auction, and certified coin show. They know the market, pricing, and often have first pick of the rarest and best quality gold coins in private showings.

4. Do buy from a volume coin dealer. The Gold Information Network has a significant inventory available to us on a given day. We let you choose from a wide selection of gold and silver coins, prices and grades. Most importantly, we have qualified Gold Coin Specialists in the U.S. coin market who can answer all your questions.

5. Do get a Money Back Guarantee. Insist on buying from gold coin dealers who back each sale with solid "Money Back Guarantees." At the Gold Information Network we want you to be 100% satisfied and back every rare coin sale with a 14-day Money Back Guarantee. We even refund your shipping charges both ways to make sure you are satisfied.

Our brief list of do's and don'ts could save you hundreds, even thousands of dollars. We hope you take them to heart and find one of the many reputable and honorable gold coin dealers so that you can enjoy the hobby of gold coin investing and collecting for many years to come.
